A Photo-Visit To London

St. Martens in the Fields

St. Martin in the Fields, Trafalgar, London.

There has been a church on the site where the present St. Martin stands since the middle ages, when the area was country and fields. For over 700 years it has been a place of worship. This beautiful church, so closed in by the development of the London area, was the fourth church to stand in this place and was completed in 1726, designed by James Gibbs.

The facade was a new style, with huge Corinthian columns supporting the pediment bearing the Royal Arms of George I. This style was to have inspired architects in many places, but especially in the United States in the New England region. You may enter the Church and see the magnificent beauty. It is wonderful and it is hard to imagine that just outside the sprawling and very busy Trafalgar area echoes with the sounds of people, autos, buses and the sounds of the big city.
