The Old Globe Theater was located in an area of the City of London called the "Liberty of the Clink". The "Clink" was an old prison. This was the theater where many of William Shakespeare's plays were performed. It was a round wooden theater, taking its name from a sign showing Hercules carrying the world on his shoulders. Shakespeare was a shareholder in the theater. The new Globe Theater was reconstructed and recently opened near its original site.
